Book Club Bizcuits Yo! No.3 Three Announced! image
Dear One and All,

Apologies again for the delay, but I hope it's been worth it, and that you've managed to enjoy some catch up reading as much as I have. The problem is I keep getting recommended things to read and now have a high stack of books in my cupboard on the tour bus that are just waiting jealously to be read.

But I have been preoccupied finishing off our next Book Club book, which, I am very happy to announce, is:

'The Outline of Sanity' by G.K. Chesterton.

It's changed my life quite a lot, it's fairly serious, it's somewhat political, and is my first dip into these rather dizzying and very terrifying waters. But it has gripped me and inspired me and said things I haven't known how to say but that I feel quite strongly, and so thought it was appropriate for the Book Club.

So the report is to follow, along with a bit of background as to why I chose this book (which is actually quite hard to get hold of), but you animals of the internet should have no trouble in the jungle if you're interested.

Adieu, et a bientot, homies.

Marcus

p.s. The soundtrack to this is most certainly, 'The State of Our Affairs' by Mt. Desolation (download it free from HERE), and 'Cocaine' by Old Crow Medecine Show.

  • Hey Marcus.. Thanks for the pointer to the Mt. Desolation track. That's a beauty... As for OCMS, I am a fan of old..as well as just being plain old, ha! Am loving that you thought to share what you're readin with us all... I'm kinda new to your tunes ( y'all have started a fire inside me. Loving you guys!) and have read, as well as seen on the Glasto footage, that you all like to switch instruments as suits. I'm a huge fan of The Band, who, as you know, all chopped and changed too....

  • Hiya, I just really had to tell you how fantastic your music is. Never have I connected so much with music and the lyrics in my life. It moves me more than anything I have ever heard. I listened to your album all the time whilst I was away in India for 2 months and it got me through the high times and the real low moments. I was very ill when I was home but I dragged myself to Glastonbury to see you and God was I glad I did - you left me breathless. Thank you so much - you are awesome.

  • While I broadly agree with GK and distributism I find the book itself pretty hard going as I find myself having to mentally update some of his ilustrations to the modern era as I read and it gets a bit wearing/distracting. I have to confess that I much prefer his Father Brown series but as far as his poltical stuff goes the core ideas are certainly challenging'!!

  • Marcus, I promis I will read The Out Line Of Sanity, the title alone sounds very interesting so the book probably will be to. Have you read the book What Will My Mother Say ? If you havnt I highly recommend it. I went to your concert in Portland at the aladin theater and you blew my mind!!! I have never been so amazed in my life!!And i was wondering when you started playing instruments because I have never seen anyone sing, play guitar, play the drums, and keep the beat before.

  • A really good book is 'the book of lost things' by john connoly. It sort of approaches the border between reality and fiction and what fiction would be in real life... if that makes sense. It's set in ww2 Britain, after a young boys mother has just died, not as a consequence of the war though. It's great, it deals with how a young child deals with grief, what he'll do to get his mother back. This sounds review-ish but it is just such an amazing book, I thought I'd share it. :D

  • Having a Mumford evening... purchased tickets for Bristol Academy October and just purchased the book on Amazon. As soon as it arrives I will tuck in. Your lyrics are something else so am intrigued by your book review, can't wait to see you at Latitude, my 6 year old has been practising drumming along with you but doesn't understand why he cant bring his full drum kit to the festival to play along with you. I'm packing his ukulelle so you may notice some extra accompaniment on the night!!

  • Gentlemen, wonderful music! Just love what you do. Very sad to say I missed you in Dallas heard it was a great show. When do you think you will come back to the states? Not knowing anything about your upcoming venues in the UK I wondered if you had a preference/suggested venue? Thinking about making the trip soon and might just tailor to be sure I hit one of your shows. Any feed back would be appreciated. Kindest

  • Thank you for making lovely music (which I unfortunately learned of only today - you were linked from Florence and the Machine on youtube). I'm picking up your wonderful CD tomorrow at Barnes and Noble (although I have already listened to all the tracks - amazing body of work!) but was wondering when your online store is going to be up and running? I would love to buy a tshirt :) Thanks for all your efforts!

  • Have you read Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts? That book is a MUST read. I would very much be interested to hear what you think of it. I love any book that has the potential to change ones life... so will endeavour to get my eyes on "The Outline of Sanity". Take care and bless.x
